Definitions
ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED: The term "economically disadvantaged" means
individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children. An
economically disadvantaged student may also be defined as one who receives financial aid
based on need. For example, need-based financial aid includes: Federal Pell Grant, BIA Grant,
Public Aid, WIA, and Opportunities.
SINGLE PARENT: This is a student who is unmarried or legally separated from a spouse and
has a minor child or children for whom the parent has custody or joint custody. Single pregnant
women are included in this category.
DISPLACED HOMEMAKER: This is a student who is unemployed or underemployed and is
experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment and:
- has worked primarily without remuneration to care for a home and family, and for that
reason has diminished marketable skills;
- has been dependent on the income of another family member but is no longer supported
by that income; or
- is a parent whose youngest dependent will become ineligible to receive assistance
under Part A of Title IV of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 601 et seq.) not later than 2
years after the date on which the parent applies for assistance under this title.
INDIVIDUAL WITH DISABILITIES: This is an individual with any disability, as defined in section
3 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which includes any individual who:
- has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life
activities of the individual,
- has a record of impairment as described in paragraph (1) of this definition, or
- is regarded as having an impairment described in paragraph (1) of this definition.
A student with a disability is one who is physically, mentally, emotionally, learning, and/or
developmentally disabled/impaired. A student with a disability may be identified by the student
himself on this survey, by the Department of Human Resources - Office of Rehabilitative
Services, and/or by campus service providers.
LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY (LEP): An LEP student is one who has limited ability in
speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language, and
- whose native language is a language other than English; or
- who lives in a family or community environment in which a language other than English
is the dominant language.
